a cabaret//a gathering//a soiree
arrangements by Damien Figueras
text & stories by Matthew Arnold & The Ensemble
direction by Randi Alexis Hickey
"But often, in the world's most crowded streets,
But often, in the din of strife,
There rises an unspeakable desire
After the knowledge of our buried life;........”
This piece calls upon the ensemble to celebrate how fucked//joyful it is to be continuously growing up, through songs & first person storytelling. It’s a secret party in the woods with drinking, merrymaking, and no-bullshit conversations. This piece is a concert style production that draws on text from the Matthew Arnold poem of the same name. It's a return to the sacred feeling of stories around a campfire that connect us to our lineage. to time. to the present moment.
Damien Figueras & Randi Alexis Hickey (Apartment 20) started collaborating together in 2015 on a bloody play called The Secretaries. They've paired themselves as work wives ever since, due to their unfailing sarcastic wit and a shared need to answer the question, "What song does ensemble sing that you hum in the dark?"
The Buried Life is Randi's return to producing in the very festival that made her love creating in this town. It's a moment in time to wear something fancy and be very honest with audiences, because why else do we do theater? For Damien, it's a a chance to explore larger questions of our own existence and the way we interact with the world around us through the lens of the music that shaped our generation.
